Giving the Public Access to Lung Health Experts
In an effort to reach the public and continue to bridge the gap between patient and clinician, the foundation has expanded our COPD campaign to include the Lung Health Experience. Our lung health expo brings local respiratory therapists and leading lung health experts to the public in a fun and inviting, carnival-like atmosphere. This event allows members of the community to connect with their local lung health champions so that they can begin the conversation about their lung health outside of the clinical setting, get their lungs screened by a respiratory therapist or pulmonologist, learn about different disease states, and gain empathy for those ailed with conditions and diseases like asthma and COPD. In 2017, the Lung Health Experience toured various cities in North America, visiting Oklahoma City, Nashville, and Chicago. Come see the Lung Health Experience in action at Toronto during the CHEST Annual Meeting!
On September 24, 2017, The CHEST Foundation partnered with Lifetime Fitness to bring the Lung Health Experience to the Chicago Half-Marathon. Over 12,000 people from all around the world came to Chicago to run in the races, which included a half marathon as well as a 5k. Our position near the finish line was flooded with people interested in learning more about lung health. Over 400 people received lung screenings by the end of the event.

The Lung Health Experience visited Nashville on June 10, 2017 during the Country Music Awards (CMA) Festival. The CMA Festival received more than 80,000 attendees each day, and the CHEST Foundation sat just a few blocks away from the main strip. We screened almost 300 people at the event in Nashville. In our first stop of 2017, we debuted our Lung Health Experience virtual patient tour. Family members of patients with asthma or COPD went through the Lung Health Experience virtual patient tour to gain more empathy and insight on how their loved one experiences life with these conditions and diseases. At the event we were able to perform spirometry on more than 400 people, and more than 600 people attended our event. Watch the video below to learn more about the virtual patient tour, Lung Health Experience.
The foundation was able to be part of the Oklahoma City Open Streets, a four hour event that promoted healthy living in Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City was chosen as one of our destinations due to the high volume of smokers, as well as the high prevalence of diagnosed and undiagnosed COPD.
In partnership with BREATHE California of Los Angeles County (BREATHE LA), hosted a free Lung Health Experience in downtown Los Angeles, during CHEST 2016. The free event aimed to build awareness of lung health, screen for COPD, promote healthy lung habits, and provide patient education on lung health conditions. Clinician volunteers from the CHEST Foundation provided an “Ask the Lung Health Expert” booth to answer questions about asthma, sleep, COPD, lung cancer and other lung health-related topics.
