UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES LEAD THE CONVERSATION ON LISTENING TOUR

As COVID-19 spreads across our country, the spotlight it casts on the inequalities that plague our most vulnerable and underrepresented communities has never been brighter.

“The disparities experienced by these communities, especially for people of color, have existed and gone unaddressed for decades. When COVID came along, everything boiling just under the surface rose to the top. There is no more ignoring the problem, so we must find a better way,” said Rudy Anderson, Executive Director of the CHEST Foundation.

Frontline workers need to have the appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE) to do their jobs, and our at-risk loved ones need to feel safe and supported. President’s Letter


We’ve all seen the demonstrations and the fight against injustice taking place in our country. As a nation, we struggle to understand what change means and reach agreement on how to achieve it. Many of those necessary changes center around inequities in health care for people in underserved communities.

Over the last few months, we’ve been asking “what can we do?” and “what role can we play?” at the CHEST Foundation to make a difference. We realized that we need to better understand the experiences and perspective of the people most affected. To overcome a problem, we need to know the problem. The best way to do this is by listening.

In September, the CHEST Foundation launched a national Listening Tour focused on hearing the perspective of patients and caregivers from underrepresented groups. We are inviting community leaders, clinicians, patients, and families to have open conversations about the real issues that affect demographically diverse neighborhoods. We are asking people to talk about the barriers to lung health care they experience every day.

It’s not easy to set aside our assumptions and just listen, but that’s where trust begins. Through the Listening Tour, we are engaging with people who might not otherwise know the CHEST Foundation is a resource and advocate. This endeavor will help us to change health-care access and delivery of resources to those who have traditionally gone without.

We are making a difference through the CHEST Foundation. We are bringing folks together who aren’t usually in the same room and encouraging them to talk with one another. We are providing online resources, toolkits and masks, and fun events (even virtually) that all contribute to changing lives for the better.

If the CHEST Foundation can help people learn about their lung disease, find a better doctor, or obtain necessary resources, we are succeeding at our mission. The only way we make this happen is through your support.

At a time when it’s hard to know what will make a difference, you can believe the CHEST Foundation does. We’re not waiting for better health care or equal access for all patients to happen one day. We are working to make it happen today.
